Jurisdiction US (CCPA), EU (GDPR)

OUR COMMITMENT

SnowDay Calculator is built on a simple principle: we give you useful predictions, not your data. We do not sell personal information, we do not run invasive ad tracking, and we do not store your calculator inputs on our servers. This policy explains everything we do and everything we do not do with your data.

1. Who We Are

SnowDay Calculator ("we," "us," or "our") operates the website at snowdaycalculator.cloud . We are the data controller for any personal information processed in connection with this website. If you have any questions about how we handle your data, please use the Contact Us page on our website.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Information You Enter Into the Calculator

When you use the snow day prediction tool, you may enter or select: a ZIP code or city name, expected snowfall amount, current or forecast temperature, wind speed, precipitation type, school type, storm timing, and day of the week. This input data is processed locally in your browser and used solely to generate your prediction result. It is not transmitted to or stored on our servers.

2.2 Automatically Collected Technical Data

When you visit our website, our web server and third-party analytics tools may automatically collect certain non-personally-identifying technical information, including:

  • Browser type and version (e.g., Chrome 124, Safari 17)
  • Operating system and device type (e.g., Windows 11, iOS 17, mobile/desktop)
  • IP address collected in truncated or anonymized form for geographic analytics only
  • Referring URL (the website you came from before visiting SnowDay Calculator)
  • Pages visited, time spent on each page, and navigation paths
  • Date and time of your visit
  • Approximate geographic location at the country or region level derived from anonymized IP; we do not collect or store precise GPS location

This technical data helps us understand how the Service is used, identify performance issues, and improve the user experience. It is not used to identify you personally.

2.3 Local Storage Data

We use your browser's localStorage, a standard browser feature, to store a small amount of data on your device to improve your experience across sessions. This may include your most recent calculator inputs (so you don't have to re-enter them next time) and display preferences such as light or dark mode. This data exists only on your device and is never transmitted to our servers. You can delete it at any time by clearing your browser's localStorage or site data through your browser settings.

2.4 Information You Voluntarily Provide

If you contact us through our Contact Us form or by email, we will collect the information you provide, such as your name and email address, to respond to your inquiry. We retain contact form submissions only as long as necessary to resolve your inquiry and do not use them for marketing purposes without your explicit consent.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information described above for the following purposes:

  • To operate, maintain, and improve the Service and its prediction functionality
  • To analyze aggregate usage patterns and identify opportunities to improve user experience
  • To monitor Service performance, detect technical errors, and troubleshoot issues
  • To respond to your questions, comments, or support requests
  • To comply with applicable legal obligations or respond to lawful requests from public authorities

We do not use your data for targeted advertising, behavioral profiling, or sale to third parties. We do not build user profiles based on your prediction queries.

4. Cookies and Tracking Technologies

Cookies are small text files placed on your device by a web server. We use a limited set of cookies and similar technologies on SnowDay Calculator. Below is a transparent breakdown of each type we may use:

Cookie TypeExamplesPurpose
EssentialSession ID, CSRF tokenRequired for the website to function correctly. Cannot be disabled without breaking core features. No personal data stored.
PreferenceTheme setting (light/dark), last inputsStored in localStorage (not a cookie). Remembers your display preferences and recent inputs for convenience.
AnalyticsGoogle Analytics (ga, gid)Helps us understand aggregate traffic patterns, popular pages, and technical performance. Anonymized IP. No individual tracking.

You can control and manage cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to block, delete, or restrict cookies. Please note that disabling essential cookies may affect the functionality of the Service. For more information about managing cookies, visit the help documentation for your specific browser.

5. Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google LLC, to collect and analyze aggregate information about how users interact with our website. Google Analytics uses cookies and similar technologies to collect data such as the number of visitors, pages viewed, session duration, and general geographic location (at the country or region level only). This data is processed by Google and reported to us in an aggregated, anonymized form.

We have enabled IP anonymization in our Google Analytics configuration, which means the last portion of your IP address is masked before any data is stored or processed. We do not use Google Analytics for remarketing, advertising, or demographic targeting features.

You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on (available at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout) or by enabling Do Not Track in your browser settings. Google's privacy policy is available at policies.google.com/privacy.

6. Third-Party Data Processors

We work with a limited number of third-party service providers to operate the Service. Each is bound by data processing agreements and may only use your data for the specific purpose for which they are engaged:

  • Weather Data APIs (NWS, NOAA): Provides real-time and forecast weather data. Queries sent to these services include your location input (ZIP code or city) to retrieve relevant weather data. These are public government services operating under their own data policies.
  • Google Analytics (Google LLC): Processes anonymized website usage data as described in Section 5 above. Google is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
  • Hosting and Infrastructure Provider: Our website is hosted on a third-party cloud infrastructure provider. Server access logs, which may include truncated IP addresses and technical request data, are maintained for security and performance monitoring purposes only.

We do not sell, rent, trade, or otherwise share your personal information with any third party for their own marketing or commercial purposes.

7. Data Retention

We retain different categories of data for different lengths of time:

  • Calculator inputs: Not retained on our servers. Processed in your browser only.
  • localStorage data: Retained on your device until you clear it. Never sent to us.
  • Analytics data: Retained in Google Analytics for 14 months (our configured retention setting), after which it is automatically deleted.
  • Contact form submissions: Retained for as long as needed to respond to your inquiry, typically no longer than 12 months.
  • Server access logs: Retained for up to 90 days for security and performance monitoring, then deleted.

8. Children's Privacy (COPPA)

SnowDay Calculator is widely used by students of all ages, including children under 13. We have designed the Service with this in mind:

  • The Service does not require account registration or the submission of any personal information to generate a prediction
  • We do not knowingly collect, use, or disclose personal information from children under 13 through any mechanism other than the anonymized analytics described in this Policy
  • The calculator inputs (ZIP code, weather conditions, school type) are not considered personal information under COPPA and are not stored on our servers

If you are a parent or legal guardian and believe that your child under 13 has provided personal information to us (for example, through a contact form), please contact us immediately. We will investigate and promptly delete any such information from our records upon verified request.

9. California Privacy Rights (CCPA / CPRA)

If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA) grant you the following rights with respect to your personal information:

  • Right to Know: You have the right to request disclosure of the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you, the sources of that information, the business purposes for collecting it, and the categories of third parties with whom we share it.
  • Right to Delete: You have the right to request deletion of personal information we have collected about you, subject to certain exceptions permitted by law.
  • Right to Opt Out of Sale: We do not sell personal information. This right is therefore not applicable, but we affirm it explicitly: SnowDay Calculator does not sell, share for cross-context behavioral advertising, or otherwise monetize your personal data.
  • Right to Non-Discrimination: We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of your CCPA/CPRA rights. Exercising these rights will not result in denial of Service, different pricing, or reduced quality of service.

To exercise your California privacy rights, please contact us through the Contact Us page. We will verify your identity and respond to verified requests within 45 calendar days as required by law.

10. Rights for EEA, UK, and Swiss Users (GDPR-Aligned)

Although SnowDay Calculator is primarily operated for users in the United States and Canada, we recognize that some users may access the Service from the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom, or Switzerland. To the extent that GDPR or equivalent legislation applies to our processing of your data, we are committed to honoring the following rights:

  • Right of access to obtain a copy of any personal data we hold about you
  • Right to rectification to correct inaccurate or incomplete personal data
  • Right to erasure ('right to be forgotten') to request deletion of your personal data
  • Right to restriction of processing to limit how we use your data in certain circumstances
  • Right to data portability to receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format
  • Right to object to certain types of processing, including analytics
  • Rights related to automated decision-making — we do not make automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects based on personal data

Our legal basis for processing analytics data is our legitimate interest in improving the Service. Our legal basis for processing contact form data is fulfilling your request (performance of a contract or pre-contractual steps). You may withdraw consent or object to processing at any time by contacting us. To exercise any of these rights, please use the Contact Us page.

11. Data Security

We take the security of information seriously and implement commercially reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect data processed in connection with the Service. These measures include encrypted HTTPS transmission for all pages of the website, restricted access to server infrastructure, and regular review of security practices.

However, no method of transmission over the internet or method of electronic storage is completely secure. While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security against all possible threats. If we become aware of a data security incident affecting personal information, we will notify affected users and relevant authorities as required by applicable law.

12. Do Not Track Signals

Some browsers allow you to transmit a "Do Not Track" (DNT) signal to websites you visit, indicating that you do not wish to be tracked. There is currently no universally accepted standard for how websites should respond to DNT signals. At this time, SnowDay Calculator does not alter its data collection or use practices in response to DNT signals. We will revisit this position as industry standards develop.

13. International Data Transfers

SnowDay Calculator is operated from the United States. If you are accessing the Service from outside the United States, please be aware that your information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States, where data protection laws may differ from those in your country or region.

Where we transfer data from the EEA, UK, or Switzerland to the United States, we rely on appropriate safeguards, including standard contractual clauses approved by the European Commission and participation in the EU-US Data Privacy Framework where applicable.

14. Third-Party Links

The Service may contain links to external websites, including official school district pages, NOAA, or NWS resources, and weather data services. These links are provided for your convenience. SnowDay Calculator does not control these external sites and is not responsible for their content, privacy practices, or data collection. We encourage you to review the privacy policy of any external site you visit.

15. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, the Service, or applicable legal requirements. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. In the event of significant changes affecting your rights, we may provide additional notice on the website.

Your continued use of the Service following the posting of a revised Privacy Policy constitutes your acceptance of the updated terms. We encourage you to review this page periodically to stay informed about how we handle your information.

16. Contact Us

If you have any questions, concerns, or requests relating to this Privacy Policy or the way we handle your data, please contact us through the Contact Us page on our website. We are committed to working with you to resolve any privacy concerns fairly and promptly.

For verified privacy rights requests (CCPA, GDPR, or otherwise), please clearly state the right you wish to exercise in your message so we can route it appropriately and respond within the applicable legal timeframe.
